About the artist

I write, sketch, and look at photos that I love for no apparent reason. I then pull motifs from my observations and talk about recurring themes with friends. Using phrases and ideas we have discussed as a ground, I sketch once more, adding layers of shapes and forms that have been pulled from these reflections. Then I paint the grounds, preserving fragments of my underpainting, followed by layers on top of layers on top of layers… I produce both large and small works that usually contain text in some manner.

I find it hard to verbalize how I view the world, so I stutter with color and spliced images with the hope to disassemble messages that unconsciously affect our self-perception. I wish to uncover my hidden perceptions in these grounds that I have left unabashedly bare. I tend to leave unrendered spaces so you can see how the pieces have changed with time, so you can notice the history of the surface while looking at the finished piece. Presenting work as something living that awakens with layers of labor leaves part of humanity in the piece.

I feel very dichotomous these days,

Maybe I always have,

Maybe others do too

More than anything, viewer, I want to leave you with a feeling. I want people to see and notice the random beauty that captures my attention so frequently. I want everyone to appreciate the blue that lives within shadows, the blue that adopts tinges of pink and purple as the sun falls across the sky. Such ordinary things feel spectacular at times. I hope you look again to begin a conversation with an inanimate object like I do with Hockney’s thick oil paint, Diebenkorn’s infinite layers, Frankenthaler’s encapsulating colors. I find it beautiful when an image produces a perceptible emotion.
