The first piece of this series, You’re Making Boys, depicts a young woman tugging at her shorts to cover her legs. The words painted over the image laminate the figure, forcing the viewer to look longer at the uncomfortable subject to read the message. By painting words and phrases as if they are engrained in the image itself (as they have been engrained in me), I hope to explore and dismantle some of the phrases that unknowingly become integral to self perception and presentation to others. Close Your Legs and Everyone Can See Your Nipples followed suit, carried out by a similar process of discussion with others and painting laminated phrases. Reappraisal is a powerful tool to process ideas and events that cause distress, and I hope to offer a platform for others to do so with this series.
